For the remote to work, you'll need to plug the included infrared receiver into an open controller port on the Xbox. Most gamers will never need to unplug the receiver again, as you can plug it into the rarely used fourth port. Interestingly, the receiver works best when the remote is operated almost directly in front of it, and can be a little finicky when signals are sent from the far left or right.

Control as many as eight devices through a single remote with this RCA learning model. The value of a learning remote is obvious: it lets you enjoy many of the functions of your existing remotes, including less common functions, so you don't have to repeatedly pull the old remote out of storage. To use the learning function, simply point the RCA remote at the old remote from a distance of roughly 2 inches, press the code search button until it lights up, and then assign up to 40 favorite functions from each remote. The remote can learn such functions as picture-in-picture, video switching, and a host of other choices, and then assign them to the easy-to-use touchscreen display.
Even without the learning capability, the remote still controls the primary functions of most brands of TVs, VCRs, DVD players, CD players, cable boxes, satellite receivers, and radios. The unit works by turning the touchscreen into a "virtual keypad" that accommodates whichever device you select.
